Zen Namkhan Resort : Luang Prabang, Laos

Sábado, 02 de julio de 2011.

In a place with Luang Prabang's historical pedigree, preservation is essential to eco-tourism -- the local culture and architecture are every bit as much a part of the environment as the flora and fauna are. With its groundbreaking chemical-free swimming pool and dedication to setting aside a portion of its income to promote local culture, Zen Namkhan has a solid claim on the true spirit of sustainability. Still, the measure of a small resort like this is obviously its rooms, and the ten cottages of Zen Namkhan deliver peace and tranquility in an effortlessly stylish setting.

Each room has a large terrace, of course -- the lush forest on the outskirts of Luang Prabang is best enjoyed up close. The sizable doors can (and probably should) stay wide open to move air through the interiors, which are fairly spacious and lined with dark wood. The décor is lightly sprinkled with southeast Asian touches, but nothing that makes the room feel like a museum. It's mostly just well-executed modern design that opts for rustic charm over anything too sleek.

The restaurant is devoted to herbs and vegetables grown in on-site gardens, and the cuisine, while legitimately healthy, is far from joyless. The twenty-minute drive into Luang Prabang proper is easily arranged by the hotel -- a place with "Zen" in its name can't be located too close to the hustle and bustle, right? -- but if relaxation and recharging are what you're after, it's probably not necessary to leave the hotel grounds.
